Winter Wonderland in Scuol
A winter weekend in Scuol
Every year my husband and I go away for the weekend in December. we usually stay within Switzerland, but we also went once to Stockholm. This year we traveled to Scuol. We've been to Scuol several times, but have never been able to stay at the Hotel Belvedère since it's always booked. Last Christmas we received hotel vouchers from my family, made reservations at the hotel far in advance and were able to spend 2 nights there.
We were extremely lucky as it snowed a few days before we left, but we had clear blue skies and sun the days we were there. So we went on a long snowy hike from Scuol to Tarasp and had to stop every few minutes to take pictures of the beautiful surroundings.
Scoul used to be a very popular place to go to to take the waters. There are several old building built in the 1800's where until about 5-10 years ago served the mineral water which has its source in Scuol. Now the beautiful old buildings are crumbling and there is no money to renovate them.
The Hotel Belvedère was built during this era and had been renovated and added on to accommodate guests. There is even a tunnel which connects the hotel to the modern day baths (Bogn Engiadina), which are very popular not only with the locals. This time we even managed to visit the Roman-Irish Baths.
The food at the hotel was very good and the highlight was being able to have breakfast in the "old" dining room which has very high ceilings and is paneled with Swiss stone pine, native to the Grisons area. I had hoped to be able to have dinner in that room, but we had to settle for breakfast only, but with a spectacular view of the snow covered town.
The rooms at the hotel were nicely renovated (we stayed in the original part of the hotel) and rather modern. Everything was comfortable, but the style didn't really match the feel of the hotel. It was special to wake up to a newspaper outside our bedroom door the next morning, though.
Thanks again for the vouchers and the wonderful weekend in Scuol!
